Manuscripts from the Jarring Collection
This page lists digital facsimiles and transcripts of manuscripts
in the Jarring Collection at the Lund University Library prepared by
the ATMO project.
Several forms of presentation are provided.

Digital facsimile.
For each manuscript listed, a digital facsimile is
provided. Each facimile includes a description of the manuscript
based on the Lund University Library's catalogue record,
supplemented in some cases with additional information and
often with a full transcription of Gunnar Jarring's hand-written
catalog entry for the manuscript. A link to the Lund catalog
record is provided.
Each digital facsimile is available both in XHTML form (the
default) and XML form.

Line-by-line transcript.
Where resources allow, manuscripts are transcribed. The
transcripts provide a literal record of the writing in each
manuscript, together with a lossless transliteration into Latin
script. Thumbnails of pages link into the corresponding page in
the digital facsimile.

Text / Translation.
Where possible, a reading text version has also been provided
for the manuscript. This presents the text in conventional
layout, with minimal scholarly apparatus, for reading.
Some manuscripts have been translated into English;
the translations provide a sentence-by-sentence rendering
of the text and are presented together with the original text
in the text view of the manuscript.

Linguistic annotation / Sentence view.
The translation of the text can also be viewed sentence by
sentence, in the sentence view of the manuscript.
For some texts, a linguistic analysis is also provided. In
this annotated view of the manuscript, the text has been divided
into sentences, and each word has been divided into morphemes
reflecting its inflection. Each morpheme is assigned a part of
speech and an interlinear gloss; the annotated view displays
this annotation in an intuitive interlinear format.
All transcripts, translations, and annotated versions are served in
XML and tranformed into HTML by the user's web browser. If your
browser cannot perform the transformation because it does not
support the necessary technology, an XHTML version of each
form is also provided, as a fallback.
Licensing information is available here. Every product of this project
includes a suggested citation, found at the very bottom of each document. Citation will differ by Prov. number, URL, and
extent of annotations ("Digital facsimile", "Digital facsimile and transcription", or "Digital facsimile, transcription,
and linguistics annotation").

Yusuf Bek and Ahmed Beg
Old number 68. The tale of Yusuf Bek and Ahmed Beg, popular in slightly different forms all over Central Asia. This version deals with a king of Isfahan called Boz Oghlan. He had a vezir by the name of Agha Bek to whom the king gave his sister La'l Khan Ayim in marriage. The had three children -two sons Yusuf Bek and Ahmed Beg and one daughter Qaldar Aghach by name. The translator, who gives his name as ... , made the translation at the instigation of ... (the metropolitan of Samarkand, who visited Kashghar, cf. Bellow in Forsyth's Report... p. 174). The translation, which must be an abridgement of Firdusi's work, was made in order to make the common people read and understand Firdusi's work. The end page is missing. Cf. Earlier he is called Maulana Tusi in the introductory. A later hand describes on f. 1b the book as "the tale of the world hero Rustam". The real beginning of the Shah-namah is on f. 7b. - ff. 2a-100b The beginning is missing and there is nothing to indicate the title of the whole work. The beginning of f. 2a must belong to the sixth chapter. The first two folios deal with the holy Noah. On f. 3a the beginning of the seventh chapter is to be found dealing with Shadad ibn 'Ad (the name of an impious king, founder of the gardens of Iran). On f. 5b begins the ninth chapter, the eight being omitted, followed on f. 17 of the tenth chapter dealing with the prophet Ibrahim; on f. 21a the beginning of the fifteenth chapter, all the others omitted, dealing with the prophet Yaqub. On f. 25b the beginning of the sixteenth chapter dealing with Yusuf and Zelikha, which is the main theme of the rest of the book. For Yusuf and Zelikha, cf. Prov. 12, 364
